Steve Smith assured Jack Leach in the aftermath of the final Test that he was not poking fun at him when he donned glasses to celebrate Australia’s Ashes triumph — but England’s new cult batting hero would not have minded if he had.

The pair posed at the Oval as both teams came together for a post-Ashes drink on Sunday when Leach, whose batting in glasses during his extraordinary stand at Headingley with Ben Stokes became one of the images of the Ashes, told Smith no offence had been taken.

‘Steve came to tell me his celebration at Old Trafford wasn’t about me,’ insisted Leach. ‘I didn’t know if it was or wasn’t but I was kind of hoping it was because I thought it was a good laugh.

‘I was very embarrassed when a video of me re-enacting my one not out in Leeds came out so I think I deserved getting some stick to be honest. That’s why we had a picture after the game with him wearing my glasses!’

The likeable Leach, who hopes to play for Somerset in what could be a championship decider against Essex next week, is still coming to terms with his new-found fame. ‘The support for me has been something I didn’t think I’d ever experience,’ he said.

‘Maybe it’s because of my batting but I think it’s mainly because I’m bald and wear glasses. The way the public have warmed to me is something very special.’

That support was epitomised on Sunday when Leach was again batting in the final Test victory. He said: ‘The crowd were singing, “Stand up if you love Jack Leach”. And I thought, “What is going on?”.

Nathan Lyon came over and said, “How many beers do you owe me?” (for fumbling that crucial run out at Headingley). I think I owe him a lot!’
