2nd Test: SA 275 all out at stumps on Day 3

- Keshav Maharaj (72) was the top scorer for South Africa
- Ashwin returned figures of 4/69 while Umesh ended up with three wickets (3/37)
Keshav Maharaj on his injury and and maiden Test fifty: "It's very sore (shoulder), I dived on it yesterday, lots of bruising, but hopefully, I will be fine going further into the Test series. Myself and Vernon (Philander) decided that trying to go to tea unscathed was the first target, I was a bit injudicious at times (being a lower order batsman), he kept me in my mind and space and I managed to get some runs. I sat with Prasanna (South Africa analyst) last night, the game plan for me going forward was to how to play spin, I wanted to try and go outside off-stump, for Jadeja, tried to get my left leg out of the way. The wicket is deteriorating, it's becoming difficult to score runs and Shami got it to reverse as well. It was tough, but think we managed it well. Not at all (when asked if he would advise his batsmen), to be honest, I was in a lot of pain myself. We wanted to spend as much time as possible, don't know what India will do, but we need to keep being positive, don't go into a shell and try and build some partnerships and transfer some pressure back on the bowlers."
Vernon Philander and Keshav Maharaj played out of their skins to register an excellent 109-run partnership for the ninth wicket but India eventually wrapped up South Africa's first innings on 275 at stumps on the third day of the Pune Test. With this, India took a big 326-run first innings lead. India skipper Virat Kohli will now have time till tomorrow morning to decide whether to enforce follow-on or not. Reeling at 162/8 in the second session, both Maharaj and Philander showed great courage and resistance and took the Proteas innings forward. The partnership between them lasted over 43 overs. Ashwin eventually got rid of Maharaj for 72 to break the frustrating stand. Kagiso Rabada was too dismissed for 2 as Ashwin finished with figures of 4/69. Philander remained unbeaten on 44. For India, Umesh Yadav ended with figures of 3/37 while Mohammed Shami picked up a couple of wickets. Ravindra Jadeja too had a success in form of Senuran Muthusamy.
