A cricketer can emerge from Hubballi too: Rohit Sharma
HUBBALLI: There is a big scope for cricket and cricket academies will help explore talents and provide a platform to showcase it, said Indian cricket vice captain and opener Rohit Sharma.
Speaking with TOI after launching his ‘CricKingdom’ Cricket Academy in association with Shri Durga Sports Academy in the city on Friday, Sharma said that there is still a lot of potential for cricket academies through which players from urban and rural areas will get a platform to showcase their talent.
“CricKingdom will provide a platform to learn the game’s techniques with the latest technologies. We have already launched a cricket academy in Pune and other parts of the country and Hubballi is the first destination in Karnataka,” he said.
“Gradually we plan to spread our network in Mysuru, Bengaluru and other places,” he added. When asked about former opener Saurav Ganguly becoming the BCCI president, Sharma said it would help the development of cricket.
Stating that it was his first visit to Hubballi, he said he was overwhelmed by the great response and warm welcome. He added that he would keep visiting the city and personally monitor the performance of the academy.
Sharma released a jersey, report cards and other materials at a programme in a city hotel in Vidyanagar, . “A player who will play for India will definitely emerge fromHubballi in the future and I am very excited about it,” he said. He later interacted with the children at the venue.
Fans wait in rain
Hundreds of fans had gathered at the academy and the hotel to see and listen to Rohit Sharma. Many school and college students stood in the rain to see him and shouted ‘Rohit, Rohit’ when he pass the road in a car. Rohit was accompanied by his wife Ritika Sharma and CricKingdom director and country head Parag Dahiwal.
Jayamrutyunjaya Swamiji of Kudalasangam Peetha, Veeresh Undi of Shri Durga Sports Academy, KSCA convener Avinash Potadar, chairman Veeranna Savadi, MLC Pradeep Shettar, former KSCA convener Baba Bhusad, coach Pramod Kamat, and others were present at the inaugural.
