A Perfect 10! 16-Year-Old Nirdesh Baisoya Runs Through The Side With All The Wickets In U-16 Vijay Merchant Trophy
Nirdesh Baisoya bowled a deadly spell for Meghalaya against Nagaland in a U-16 Vijay Merchant Trophy game that saw him take all 10 wickets in an innings.
The 15-year-old hails from Meerut and is a fan of Lyon. For the last one year he has been playing professional cricket at the age-group level in Meghalaya. He used a turning tack to his advantage and struck gold.
He is not the first to do so though. Manipur’s Rex Singh did the same vs Arunachal Pradesh in an U-19 Cooch Behar Trophy match.
“It is an unbelievable feeling. I was confident and bowling well but 10 wickets in an innings was not something I was expecting,” he said Baisoya.
His figures read 10-51 in 21 overs.
He did praise the role of the fielders in getting all his 10 wickets
“The wicket was turning but our fielding was quite good. The fielders’ contribution was crucial in getting all those wickets,” he remarked.
He starred with the bat too and made 68 runs before being dismissed.
“After the first session, the coach told me I needed to be positive and that I had it in me to get all the 10 wickets,” said Baisoya
Baisoya wanted to be a batsman and took up cricket four years ago. But things changed
“It was during a training session that my coach Sanjay Rastogi asked me to bowl for a while, and that is how I took to bowling off-spin. He kept trusting me with the ball thereafter,” he said.
His father works in a factory in Noida and he is grateful for his family's support
“They’ve been given me immense support and encouragement. Once they came to know about my feat via the BCCI website, they’ve been on cloud nine,” he said.
The off-spinner’s immediate aim is to make the cut for the India U-19 side. “It’s something I’m working hard for,” he added.
10 wickets in an inning is no mean feat. It has been achieved twice in Tests. Jim Laker and Anil Kumble are the only ones to have done it. Yes, of course it is not the same thing for this youngster but he can feel proud to have emulated the likes of them. Rex will be feeling the same way.
Keep it up young man. Who knows, in a few years we might even see him playing for the senior team! You never know what can happen and it is best to let things play out.
