On Sunday (October 13), India enforced the follow-on on South Africa ahead of the fourth day's play of the second and penultimate Test in Pune. After dismissing the Proteas for a moderate 275 all-out in 105.4 overs, India had the option to either enforce the follow-on or come out to bat and set up a huge total on board. Nonetheless, the former happened but miseries continued to pile up for the visiting side at the MCA Stadium, Pune.

India's pace spearhead Ishant Sharma struck on the second ball of the day and removed opener Aiden Markram for no score. Thus, this Markram attained a pair in the second Test, as he was dismissed for 0 in the first essay off Umesh Yadav. In addition, the 25-year-old joined the likes of Gary Kirsten and Herschelle Gibbs in a dubious record following a pair in Pune. He became the third South African opener, and fourth in the list, to have pairs in a Test since Proteas' readmission in the game.

Gary Kirsten v West Indies, Bridgetown 2000/01
Herschelle Gibbs v India, Jo'burg 2006/07
Gibbs v Windies, Port Elizabeth 2007/08
Markram v India, Pune 2019/20 *

Speaking of the dismissal, the ball angled in and hit Markram's pads. The umpire's finger went up in no time. However, the replays showed that the ball was going over the stumps. Markram had a chat with his partner, Dean Elgar, but the duo wasn't sure whether to opt for a review and decided against it eventually. Had the right-hander taken the review, he may have prevented himself from the dubious record.

Earlier, India became the first side to enforce a follow-on on South Africa in the format since 2008. Back then, England had asked the Proteas to follow-on in the Lord's Test. However, the visitors escaped from a defeat after making amends from their mistakes in the first innings. Will the script remain the same this time around in Pune?

Also, this became the first-ever instance where India enforced the follow-on on South Africa in Test history.
