Steven Smith can not do anything wrong in this Ashes series. The Australian talismanic batsman has already smashed 751 runs at an unbelievable average of 150.20. Furthermore, Smith took a one-handed blinder at second slip to dismiss all-rounder Chris Woakes. Smith flew to his right like a bird and latched on to a fantastic catch.
Earlier, Smith had also taken a good low catch while diving to his left to dismiss Joe Denly, who missed out on a well-deserved century. Smith has not only been superb with the bat for the tourists’ but also he has caught everything in the slips that have come his way. However, Smith had also bungled Joe Root’s catch in the first dig.
In fact, England’s opener Rory Burns had also taken a one-handed blinder in the first innings to dismiss Peter Siddle.
On the other hand, England has put their noses ahead in the fifth and final Test match. The hosts’ lead by a gargantuan margin of 382 runs and still have two wickets in hand. Joe Denly, who recently became a father, scored a fine knock of 94 runs.
Furthermore, England’s vice-captain continued his good form with the bat as he scored a gutsy 67 run knock. Stokes and Denly added 127 runs for the third wicket partnership to put their team in the driver’s seat.
Jos Buttler also backed his first innings performance of 70 runs with a good knock of 47 runs. For Australia, Nathan Lyon was the pick of the bowlers as the off-spinner scalped three wickets. Mitchell Marsh and Peter Siddle snared two wickets each.
Subsequently, Australia will need to bat out of their skins to chase down the imposing target. However, the visitors have been a one-man army thus far and England would like to finish the series at 2-2.
