BCCI’s President-Elect Sourav Ganguly Shares His Views On MS Dhoni’s Future
Former India captain and BCCI’s President-elect, Sourav Ganguly has commented on MS Dhoni’s international future and has said that a call on him will only be taken once he (Ganguly) meets selectors on October 24, the day when the MSK Prasad-led selection panel will pick the squads for the T20I and Test series against Bangladesh.
In all likeliness, Dhoni will be missing the series. Neither the BCCI nor the selectors have any idea when Dhoni will make himself available for selection. He has been on a sabbatical since India’s World Cup exit. Dhoni took a break from the game to serve the Indian Army and also missed the South Africa T20Is.
“I will find out from the selectors when I meet them on October 24. We will find out what the selectors are thinking and then I will put forth my opinion. We will have to see what Dhoni wants. I will also speak to him what he wants to do and what he does not want to do,” Ganguly told reporters in Kolkata today.
In Dhoni’s absence, the team management has been grooming Rishabh Pant in white-ball cricket but the team does need a clear stand from Dhoni whether he will be available for next two T20 World Cups or not.Rishabh Pant(R) and MS Dhoni. Credit: Getty
If he is available than Rishabh might be the only wicketkeeper on standby while if he isn’t available, then selectors might give chances to Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan so as to ink on one of the three wicketkeepers.
As far as Ganguly is concerned, he will officially take over as BCCI’s President on October 23. A surprise pick for the top position, Ganguly will hold the post till September 2020 before he will be forced to go on a cooling-off period.
Prior to Ganguly, it was Brijesh Patel whose name was making rounds but as soon as the former India captain announced his candidature, there was no doubt that he would become the next boss of BCCI.
The apex cricketing body has been without a President since January 2017.
