BCCI to pick squad for Bangladesh T20Is on October 24; will selectors provide clarity on MS Dhoni's future?
With the Test series against South Africa concluding with a flawless 3-0 win, the Indian team's focus now shifts to the Bangladesh tour of India which will begin with a 3-match T20I series, starting November 03. Although the Bangladesh squad for the T20Is has already been announced, the Indian team is expected to be picked on October 24. While there are suggestions that captain Virat Kohli might be rested for the assignment, there could also be a focus on the future of MS Dhoni who has been on a sabbatical since the conclusion of the 2019 ICC World Cup.
As India exited the World Cup after a semi-final loss at the hands of New Zealand, Dhoni decided to take a break and skipped the entire tour of West Indies. He extended his break until November 2019 and missed the home series against South Africa too. Amid the scenario where there still remains a big question mark over his future in the team, more clarity on the subject can be expected as the selection committee holds its meeting for the squad selection on Thursday.
"Team selection for upcoming series against Bangladesh is to be held on October 24," a BCCI source was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
There are also suggestions that captain Kohli's workload could be reduced by giving him a break for the T20Is, with deputy Rohit Sharma to be given charge of the team.
With Sourav Ganguly also beginning his stint as the president of the BCCI, he is also expected to have a chat with skipper Kohli and other board members over multiple matters, one of which will be the future of Dhoni.
"This meeting will be crucial as its happening right after the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of BCCI. Captain Virat Kohli who is playing continuously will be given rest or not is still a question because as of now there is no confirmation from the selection panel. Also, Sourav Ganguly is likely to meet Kohli on the sidelines of the meeting," the source further revealed.
The Bangladesh team, meanwhile, are presently on a strike and have given the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) an 11-point agenda on the issues they wish to be addressed. The matter is expected to be resolved within this week and an emergency meeting in the BCB on the same has already been called.
