Ben Stokes Getting Defamed For 'Choking His Wife' Shows We Mustn't Trust Social Media Blindly
Perspective can make a great story but it can also break careers and ruin the lives of people.
On Tuesday, a media website revealed images of English cricketer Ben Stokes and his wife Clare Ratcliffe attending the Professional Cricketers' Association Awards fiftieth anniversary party, which took place in the Camden district of London.
The series of images along with the article on the portal depict that the couple attended the party, had a chat with a friend of theirs but eventually got into a big fight during which Clare asked the star cricketer to “talk to the hand”.
Subsequently, the husband and wife moved to a 'side room' in which Stokes grabbed his wife “in a chokehold then she either falls back, pulls away or is pushed back by him," the portal reported.

Such a story not only feels unsettling but makes you form an opinion towards a person which is completely based on conjecture and hearsay. It doesn't help if that person turns about to be a celebrity, much less if he's a cricketer in a cricket-loving nation.
But was it a true and complete story?
As these images went viral (for obvious reasons), Stokes began to get so much hate for this act of violence that his wife, Clare had to come to his rescue and write a message to all his fans talking about what actually happened at the time when the paparazzi decided to sneak in and click those images.
Unbelievable what nonsense these people will make up! Me and Ben messing about squishing up each other's faces cos that's how we show affection and some pap tries to twist it in to a crazy story! And all before we then have a romantic McDonalds 20 mins later! @benstokes38pic.twitter.com/1HmPV1ZfxG— Clare Stokes (@clarey_11) October 8, 2019

@benstokes38,” she tweeted after reading the article.
Stokes simply replied to Clare's tweet with an emoji:

Unfortunately enough, it is for the second time in less than a month that Ben Stokes had to go through such public humiliation thanks to a publication's insensitivity towards the cricketer's personal life.
A couple of weeks ago, one of the major and nation-wide news portals went on to write a front page article about how the cricketer who was England's star performer during the ICC World Cup 2019 and the Ashes 2019, had a dark story about his family's past.
The cricketer had expressed frustration and anger towards the tabloid on Twitter back then as well.

What is the truth? Who's lying and who's hiding the facts? It is difficult to determine, sure. But isn't that the whole point of journalism, to get to the bottom of a story before assuming something and putting an article out there stating facts?
