Bengal welcomes the spectacular comeback of the Prince of Kolkata
Know what dadagiri truly means? Ask our brand new Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president, Sourav Ganguly, aka Dada. After opening his international career with a century in England, Dada went on to become one of the most successful captains of Team India. His decisions, including that of handing over the keeper’s gloves to Rahul Dravid, elevating Virender Sehwag to the opener slot and infusing talented players like Yuvraj Singh and Mahendra Singh Dhoni, among others, into the team did wonders for Indian cricket. After retirement, he headed the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), earning that crucial experience that will help him handle this new role.
Welcoming the news, cricketer Laxmi Ratan Shukla said, “I have played with Dada and under his captaincy too, and I feel that he deserves to be in the hot seat, as there can’t be a better leader than him. A player and one of the finest captains holding this post is apt, as he knows what to do to uplift the game and the players. At a time when BCCI’s image is taking a beating due to various reasons, Dada’s appointment will certainly be good for the game.” Veteran cricketer Arun Lal said, “The best man to lead Indian cricket has been entrusted with the responsibility. It will be a challenge for Sourav to resurrect Indian cricket after the turmoil of the last three years. He captained India with purpose and distinction and I have no doubt that he will do the same as president of the board.”
‘Sourav always has surprises in store for you’
Sourav always has surprises in store for you. That has always been him. But we didn’t know if he would become the BCCI president though he was a strong contender. He had done good work as the CAB president and BCCI is just a bigger platform. And I think he is truly capable of handling the new post. I have seen the love and passion he has had for cricket from a very young age and how he misses being on the field. Recently, everyone who saw his expressions while Team Delhi was playing an IPL match could understand how much he was into the game. As a young cricketer, he had given his best for the game. As a captain, he did wonders for his country. The positive changes he brought about as a CAB president are also commendable. What he does is basically good for cricket. Indian cricket is anyway doing well and Sourav will add to its glory as the BCCI president. I am sure he will uphold the standards of Indian cricket and do wonders for the country again. When he became the CAB president, people were apprehensive of how a star cricketer like him would divide time between the role and other commitments. But he did the job with such dedication. His resolve as a person, his leadership and his administrative experience will help him as the BCCI president.

‘With his capabilities, Sourav will do commendable work even in a few months’
This is a fantastic development. It’s a great honour for him, irrespective of the duration. Given Sourav’s capability, I’m sure he will do something commendable. The biggest advantage for him is that he is a fighter. We all understand that those who know how to fight for themselves, make a mark in the world. This is a quality that helps any human being in any field of work. It’s great that he is the first Indian cricketer to be appointed as the BCCI president. But I would also say that a good trend has started with him. Even Mohammed Azharuddin and Roger Binny are into administrative work. These cricketers bring more to the table. They have played the game, they know how things work. Moreover, I feel cricketers as administrators are more neutral than others. I have been constantly in touch with Sourav, even after the decision. Everyone is wishing him and we feel great as a family.
