CPL 2019: Patriots through to Playoffs after thrilling win against Tridents
St Kitts and Nevis Patriots edged Barbados Tridents by one runs to cement a place in the Playoffs of the Caribbean Premier League 2019. The Patriots posted 149/7 after being put into bat with Shamarh Brooks top-scoring with a half-century. In reply, Tridents were making steady progress before Carlos Brathwaite triggered a collapse, and with two needed off the final ball, Dominic Drakes bowled Harry Gurney to seal a thrilling win.
The Patriots lost opener Mohammad Hafeez early, even Brooks scored aggressively to keep the scoreboard ticking. Brooks and Devon Thomas added 43 runs for the fourth wicket before the partnership was broken by Raymon Reifer. Brooks struck six boundaries and two sixes during his 33-ball stay but him departing shortly after, 150 looked improbable for Patriots.
Shakib Al Hasan dealt a crucial blow to the patriots, removing Brathwaite out LBW, before it was finally left to Fabian Allen's 13-ball 20 and Keron Cottoy's 10-ball 13 to push the total near 150.
Alex Hales and Shakib led a steady reply, after the early exit of Johnson Charles, putting on 41 for the second wicket, before Brathwaite picked the first of his three wickets. He had Shakib out to Brooks, and followed it with the scalp of JP Duminy and Jonathan Carter. Cottrell ran through the lower-middle order to finish with 3/27 himself but a well-set Reifer threatened to take the game away.
The equation boiled down to 12 required off the final over and when the first legal delivery was tonked over extra cover after a wide that began the over, Tridents would have fancied their chances. But off the next ball Reifer was run out, returning for a two that never existed. The last ball required Tridents to score two but Drakes' slowed ball foxed Gurney to hit the off stump..
