Cricket to boost Kolkata tourism to Australia

KOLKATA: Around 11,000 tourists from Kolkata visited Australia last year and spent around Rs 210 crore. Though the current slowdown may lead to a decline in tourist count this year, Tourism Australia is banking on the Kolkatan’s love for cricket to bounce back in 2020.
With the ICC World Cup coinciding with the Durga Puja-Diwali holidays next year, and the women’s edition of the tournament scheduled prior to that, Tourism Australia expects a good turnout of Indian fans, said Tourism Australia country manager (India and Gulf) Nishant Kashikar said.
Though there are no direct flights from Kolkata, Kashikar does not see that as a deterrent to the fans’ resolve to watch matches live. Gainwell, the official distributor of match tickets in Kolkata, has already devised packages beginning at Rs 90,000/person for a single match to a 29-day tour for Rs 5.5 lakh that covers all matches featuring India.
