Cricketing Fraternity Critical of Shakib But Fans Call Ban ‘Harsh’
One year of the ban is suspended, so he will not be eligible for involvement in cricket till October 2020.
BREAKING: Bangladesh captain and world No.1 ODI all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has been banned for two years (one of those suspended), for failing to report corrupt approaches on numerous occasions.https://t.co/depJ2VHSne— ICC (@ICC) October 29, 2019
The Bangladesh skipper violated Article 2.4.4 in which he failed to disclose to the ACU full details of any approaches or invitations he received to engage in corrupt conduct.
These charges are in relation to two approaches to fix the Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe Tri-Series in January 2018, and an IPL 2018 match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kings XI Punjab.
Since the ban, the cricketing fraternity has been critical of Shakib’s intentions and has pulled him up for inaction. They have took to Twitter to express their shock and disbelief at how a senior cricketer of Shakib’s stature would go about without reporting such an incident.
No sympathy what’s so ever for Shakib Al Hasan ... Non what’s so ever ... In this era the players get briefed all the time about what they can & cant do and what that have to report straight away ... 2 yrs isn’t enough ... Should have been longer ...— Michael Vaughan (@MichaelVaughan) October 29, 2019
Sakib is surely best player and biggest figure ever in Bangladesh cricket. Easily the highest earning too. Why would he not report overtures made to him by bookies and leave himself vulnerable? Inexplicable— Cricketwallah (@cricketwallah) October 29, 2019
No player today, let alone as high profile a cricketer as Shakib, can afford to be ignorant of the ICC's Anti-Corruption Code. Even young players in age-group cricket are advised to report approaches. To let three such approaches go by is very strange https://t.co/KgtYBWOj13— Harsha Bhogle (@bhogleharsha) October 29, 2019
shakib hasn't reported 3 separate approaches as per the ICC media release...boggles the mind why he wouldn't— Gaurav Kalra (@gauravkalra75) October 29, 2019
While I felt two years was harsh the more I read and think I have to say Shakib must have known what he was doing and that withholding info wasn’t an inadvertent act but rather a very deliberate one. Plain stupid from a player of his stature.— Boria Majumdar (@BoriaMajumdar) October 30, 2019
Meanwhile, fans from all across the world took a different stance and side with Shakib, calling the ban too ‘harsh’.
Unbelievable! Isn't it too harsh on Shakib? Was he involved in fixing?— Abhi Silswal (@AbhiSilswal707) October 29, 2019
I think his only fault was not to inform the ICC and Anti corruption unit about the match fixing proposal.
For that two years ban is a bit harsh. I hope ICC reconsider this decision.
okay @ICC congratulations you are on your way to destroy an all-rounder’s career ?— S T R A N G E R ?? (@ItsSavageQueen) October 29, 2019
don’t forget Legends don’t become legends overnight they have to go through storms many ups and downs, tough times will come but they embrace it with strong mind ??

Terrible decision by Icc to ban shakib for a year #ShakibAlHasan— Arnav Singh (@Arnavv43) October 29, 2019
A sad day for so many reasons. He was the top rated all rounder, he was a pillar for @BCBtigers , an inspiration for emerging players and most importantly the game continues to be threatened by fixing. #ShakibAlHasan#BangladeshCrickethttps://t.co/Aj97exfJUG— Gautam Sood (@gautamsood) October 30, 2019
Worlds Greatest Allrounder of All time. A 1 year suspension won’t affect him in any way. In fact he can comeback stronger than ever before and get back to his throne and show everyone who the real the king is. #ShakibAlHasan#NationsPridepic.twitter.com/MnzyhAqP7z— ! Shakib Al Hasan will be eligible to return to cricket on 29 October, 2020.
