Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag hailed Rohit Sharma's stellar effort with the bat in his debut Test as an opener. Rohit repaid the faith shown in him by the selectors and team management with back-to-back hundreds in the first Test against South Africa in Vizag inspiring India to an emphatic 203-run win on Sunday. Rohit finished the game with a staggering 303 runs under his belt and was deservingly awarded the Man of the Match.

Rohit was trusted to open the batting by captain Virat Kohli and the team management after KL Rahul was dropped following his poor run in whites. Rohit was expected to go all guns blazing at home and he did exactly that plundering the South African bowlers all around the park in his back-to-back hundreds. He scored a stunning 176 in the first innings and followed it up with a brilliant 127-run-knock in the second innings.

Rohit combined with double-centurion Mayank Agarwal to post a record 317-run stand for the first wicket in India's first innings powering the hosts to a big total of 502 runs on the board. South Africa too responded strongly with the bat and posted 431 runs riding on centuries from Dean Elgar and Quinton de Kock. India then posted 323 runs on the board in their second innings and the bowlers did the rest as South Africa fell short in the 395-run chase.

Mohammed Shami was the wrecker-in-chief for India in the second innings as he picked up an excellent five-wicket haul finishing with figures of 5/35 in his 10.5 overs. Sehwag took to Twitter to congratulate the Indian team for their terrific show and hailed Rohit for a dream start to Test career as an opener.

"Fantastic test match for @ImRo45, a dream beginning to opening the batting in Test cricket. Wish him the very best. That was a convincing win for India with some great contributions from Mayank, Shami, Ashwin, Pujara," tweeted Sehwag.

Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar, spinner Harbhajan Singh and several others from the cricket fraternity congratulated Team India after their victory in the first Test.

Apart from Rohit, Mayank and Shami, spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin also had a significant role to play with the ball in India's victory. Ashwin was brilliant in the first innings returning with a seven-wicket haul and finished the game with total eight wickets under his belt while Jadeja scalped total six wickets across the two innings and displayed some magnificent fielding throughout the encounter.
