England To Offer Head Coach Role To India’s World Cup-Winning Coach Gary Kirsten: Report
England are considering offering the head coach post to South Africa legend Gary Kirsten. As per a report in The telegraphg.co.uk, Kirsten’s name is on the top of the list and the process to appoint him as the coach of England will start this week, given he agrees to take up the full-time role.
Kirsten has been taking up part-time coaching roles for the past few years. His previous full-time stint came with South Africa. Kirsten has been part of T20 circuit after SA stint.
Should he accept England’s offer, Kirsten will have to leave his commitments at Mzansi Super League (MSL) and The Hundred. He was appointed as head coach Durban Heat for the upcoming season of MSL and the Cardiff-based side for the Hundred, that takes place next year.
Kirsten, who has a healthy experience as a coach, had coached India to their second World Cup title win in 2011. Skipper MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli heaped praises on the head coach for his role during the World Cup.
Dhoni had called Kirsten the best thing that had happened to Indian cricket.
After quitting India job, he coached South Africa for three years. During his stint, South Africa claimed the top spot in Tests. He will be offered a coaching role across formats and will have to do the heavy lifting.
England are expected to get a new head coach before the start of New Zealand tour that starts next month.
England’s search for head coach started after Trevor Baylis’ exit. The veteran coach coached England for four years. Under him, England won the 50-over World Cup for the first time and levelled the Ashe 2019.
After Ashes 2017, Bayliss had confirmed that he will be leaving England job after Ashes 2019. Though he has kept the door ajar for Australia position if he is offered.
Next year, he will make his IPL return as he replaced Tom Moody as the head coach of IPL franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad.
