- Pacer Jasprit Bumrah’s injury has opened the door for Umesh Yadav, who has been drafted into the Indian Test squad
- Another guy who will be keen to make a mark will be Karnataka’s Karun Nair
VIZIANAGARAM: The focus of the three-day tour game between Indian Board President’s XI and South Africa at the Dr PVG Raju ACA Sports Complex here from Thursday to Saturday will undoubtedly be on skipper Rohit Sharma, but there are a few others who would be keen on showcasing their skills.
Opener Mayank Agarwal will not only be keen to get some runs under his belt but also work out an understanding with Rohit in the middle. The openers will be key to the team’s success. Therefore, Mayank and Rohit will get an opportunity to start working on their partnership even as they face a formidable South African pace attack. Kagiso Rabada, Venon Philander and Lungi Ngidi will not be easy to tackle on a wicket which promises to help the pacers. Hence, Rohit and Mayank will have their task cut out.
Pacer Jasprit Bumrah’s injury has opened the door for Umesh Yadav, who has been drafted into the Indian Test squad. This game will also give Umesh, if the management plays him, an opportunity to impress the selectors ahead of the Tests. Another guy who will be keen to make a mark will be Karnataka’s Karun Nair. The 27-year-old has played six Tests with a highest of 303 not out against England in 2016. He got to play three more Tests but couldn’t gain the confidence of the team management.
Local lad KS Bharat will be eager to live up to the expectations of chief selector MSK Prasad. Bharat is touted to be the back-up for Rishabh Pant if the latter continues to falter. Bharat has been with the India ‘A’ teams for a long time. The South Africans have done pretty well in the T20Is series but with only one three-day game ahead of the Test series, they will be eager to iron out some deficiencies.
