Former India captain Sourav Ganguly believes that KL Rahul will have to make the most of the chances given after losing his place in the Test side due to lack of form.
Sourav Ganguly identified Shreyas Iyer and Manish Pandey as the two batsmen who he believed will push KL Rahul for India's No. 4 spot in ODIs.
Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma are India's first-choice openers, which makes it tough for Rahul to make the cut into the playing XI.
"With Rohit and Shikhar at the top as the best possible opening pair, KL Rahul will be pushed. He has lost his place in Test cricket due to indifferent form and the likes of Shreyas and Manish Pandey will keep him on his toes if he wants to hold onto the No. 4 slot," Ganguly wrote in his column for The Times of India.
Shreyas Iyer, who was preferred over Rahul as India's No.4 during the West Indies series, showed his good form as he scored successive fifties in the second and third ODI to cement his position in the national side.
Iyer scored 16 runs and remained unbeaten as India romped to a dominant 7-wicket win over South Africa in the 2nd T20I in Mohali. Manish Pandey too has shown good touch in the Karnataka Premier League and against South Africa 'A' recently.
"Shreyas Iyer finds a place in the T20 squad, a reward for his good show in the 50-overs games in West Indies," Ganguly added. Sourav Ganguly further stated that South Africa are on a rebuilding phase.
"South Africa are in a rebuilding phase. They need to look at the system back home. Not very long ago, they boasted of having enormous talent, but like many teams, they have dropped a few levels down."
