Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma came into the playing XI in place of KL Rahul, who grabbed the opportunity with both hands. The dressing room will breathe a sigh of relief after Rohit responded well, hitting twin centuries in his first Test as an opener.

After playing a massive knock of 176 runs in the first innings, Rohit Sharma backed it up with another century in the second innings – both very significant in the context of the match. With the first-innings hundred, Rohit added record-breaking 317 runs partnering Mayank Agarwal.

In the second essay, Rohit stepped up to the occasion when India needed quick runs to give the bowlers enough time to pick ten wickets. The bowlers responded well as India go 1-0 up in the series and consolidate their top spot in the ICC World Test Championship.

Rohit Sharma, who was adjudged the man of the match, thanked the selectors for giving him an opportunity. Rohit also said that he is happy to give his best and contribute to India’s win. The Mumbai-born cricketer said that the focus was to win the match and they are happy to do it.

“Just wanted to go out there and do what I do best. Great opportunity for me at the top. Thankful for the chance, considering I’ve never done that before. Focus was on winning the Test match and I think we pretty much did everything right today,” Rohit said.

Furthermore, Rohit Sharma revealed that the call to make him the opener was not surprising. He said that he was told beforehand that he will open the batting someday and Rohit used to practice with the new red ball. Rohit also spoke about his plan to be successful at the top in Tests.

“Couple of years ago it was communicated to me that I might open someday. Even in nets I used to practice with the new ball. Wouldn’t say it was a surprise. No matter what ball you play, whether it’s red ball or white ball. At the start you’ve got to be careful. Focus on basics – leaving ball outside off, playing close to the body,” Rohit continues.

With two more games to follow, Rohit Sharma is keen to do the job he has been given. He is likely to bat as he does in the white-ball cricket. Rohit is backing himself to keep up his scintillating form in the matches to follow.

“My job here is to play in a certain manner, that’s what they expect me. And I’m going to try to do that. It’s my game to mix caution with aggression. Everything depends on the situation you’re batting in.  I back myself and I guess fortune favours the brave,” he concluded.
