South Africa resumed their innings at 136 for 6 after lunch on Day 3 of the second Test between India and South Africa in Pune. The visitors' captain Faf du Plessis & S Muthusamy were at the crease. India chose spin to start with Jadeja and Ashwin in the attack operating from both ends. In the 45th over, Jadeja turned one into the rough and caught Muthusamy in the crease, who offered no shot. This marked the first instance of Muthusamy being dismissed in Test cricket as he had managed to survive in both the innings of the first Test.

Vernon Philander joined his captain at the crease after that. The duo started steadying the innings by meticulously playing the spinners. But India's numero uno off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin slipped a straight one to the South African captain who was expecting it to turn. The ball kissed Du Plessis' bat before being gobbled up by Rahane at slip.

The visitors did not lose any further wicket in the session as tailenders Philander and Keshav Maharaj managed to hang on. Both of them have played around 19 overs together as South Africa went into the tea break at 197 for the loss of 8 wickets on Day 3 of the second Test match against India in Pune.

South Africa is still more than two follow-ons away from levelling the scores. Their misery has been suspended with a bit of resistance from Philander and Maharaj. Will India enforce the follow-on or will South Africa manage to avoid it? They will need something magical to happen as it looks like a far-fetched dream for now.

The story of the match so far

On Thursday, Indian skipper Virat Kohli won the toss and elected to bat first in the second test in Pune. India did not begin well as it lost Sharma early but Agarwal managed to score a century. Kohli scored his career-high 253*, his record seventh double century. Pujara, Rahane and Jadeja chipped in with valuable half-centuries as well. India posted a mammoth total of 601 for 5. South Africa ended the day's play at 36 for 3 at Stumps on Day 2.
