India was able to draw first blood in the three-match T20I series against South Africa as they won convincingly by seven wickets. The visitors had posted an under-par score of 149 runs and the hosts were able to chase it down easily with balls to spare. Shikhar Dhawan and skipper Virat Kohli added 61 runs for the second wicket partnership.

Indian vice-captain Rohit Sharma could only score two sixes before he was plumbed in front by Andile Phehlukwayo. Shikhar Dhawan looked fluent for his 40 runs but he had walk back after David Miller came up with a stunning one-handed catch. However, Rishabh Pant could not get going as he mistimed his shot.

It was Kohli’s show.

Subsequently, Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer combined to take India over the line. Indian skipper Virat Kohli was able to get into his stride as he scored two beautiful boundaries to get going. The talismanic batsman didn’t give a sniff to the Proteas bowlers as he batted with control. Iyer was also able to hit the ground running as he continued his good form going.

Kohli timed the ball to perfection as he batted at the top of his game to bring up his 22nd T20I fifty. On the other hand, Shreyas Iyer was able to give good support to his skipper.

Earlier in the day, South Africa was able to post 149 after Virat Kohli decided to bowl first. Quinton de Kock was South Africa’s best batsman as the captain scored a fine knock of 37-ball 52 with the help of eight fours.

Temba Bavuma – making his T20I debut showed that he can be an asset in the shortest format as he scored 49 runs.
