Virat Kohli's seventh Test double-century powered India (IND) to a mammoth first innings total of 601/5 declared, before seamers struck to pile on further misery for South Africa (SA) in the second Test in Pune. Kohli reached three figures for the first time in the longest format this year. The India captain crafted a magnificent 254*. South Africa face a battle to avoid going 2-0 down in the three-game series. They would need big knocks from skipper Faf du Plessis and Quinton de Kock to give the hosts a tough fight. On Day 2, Kohli marched on from his overnight score of 63*, combining with Ajinkya Rahane in a 178-run partnership for the fourth wicket, before the India vice-captain was removed by Keshav Maharaj when on 59. Kohli continued to dominate the Protea attack and reached his double-century. He and Ravindra Jadeja, who hit 91, stitched a 225-run stand for the fifth wicket.

South Africa openers Aiden Markram and Dean Elgar, who walked in to bat with 15 overs remaining before the end of day's play, were removed by Umesh Yadav inside four overs.

Mohammed Shami then carried on from where he had left off in Visakhapatnam, striking with his first ball to have Temba Bavuma caught behind for eight.

South Africa ended Day 2 at 36/3, still trailing India by 565.
