Rohit Sharma slammed his maiden ton as Test opener as India continued their dominance over South Africa in the second session on Day 1 of the first Test in Vizag. Riding on Rohit's fourth Test century, India went to tea at 202 without any loss. Resuming on 91/0 post lunch, both Rohit and Mayank showed aggressive intent in the second session, taking on the South African bowlers, espicially spinners. Rohit, in particular, looked unstoppable as he took his sixes count to 5 during his unbeaten 115-run knock. Mayank (84*) too got past his previous highest score (77) in Test cricket. Bad light and overcast weather forced umpires to take tea break before the scheduled time.

India captain Virat Kohli opted to bat without any hesitation after winning a crucial toss in the series opener. Rohit and Mayank, who came out to bat as openers for the first time in India, looked cautious at the start. Both had a few anxious moments early on as Kagiso Rabada and Vernon Philander troubled them with the new ball. But then, the duo found form and timing and looked confident against spinners.
