Opener Dean Elgar (76*) and skipper Faf du Plessis (48*) fought back after a poor start as South Africa went to lunch on Day 3 with 153 runs on the board for the loss of four wickets in Vizag. Resuming on the overnight score of 39/3, the Proteas lost Temba Bavuma early in the morning session as Ishant trapped him in front of the stumps with a superb in-dipper. Elgar and Du Plessis then stitched a crucial unbeaten 90-run partnership to take South Africa out of trouble. In the process Elgar also got to his 14th fifty. The left-hander also got lucky when wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha dropped him off Ravindra Jadeja on 74. Du Plessis, on the other hand, looked in good form and showed positive intent. Both took on the Indian spinners and denied them any wickets. For India, Ishant was the lone wicket-taker in the first session.

Pitch report, Day 3: "The surface has gotten drier and some of the cracks have started to open up. Spinners will quite obviously start to get more purchase on this wearing surface. Batting will be hard but certainly not impossible. It's about being as watchful as possible and watching the ball till the very end. Crucial to ensure that the batsmen look to counter the turning the ball and not fall to the straight ball. Using their feet will be crucial for the batsmen," said Murali Kartik and Sunil Gavaskar.

Staring down the barrel and still 463 runs behind India, the visitors were reeling at 39/3 at stumps on day two.

Spinners Ravichandra Ashwin struck twice and Ravindra Jadeja once late in the day to put India firmly in control of the game.

Riding on Mayank Agarwal's double hundred (215) and Rohit Sharma's 176, India declared their first innings at 502/7.

South Africa lost Aiden Markram (5), Theunis de Bruyn (4) and nightwatchman Dane Piedt (0) after dark skies forced the floodlights to be turned on.
