India opener Rohit Sharma mixed caution with flamboyance as he hit his 6th hundred in Tests on Day 1 of the ongoing 3rd Test between India and South Africa in Ranchi on Saturday.
Rohit Sharma equalled former captains MS Dhoni and MAK Pataudi on the list of most hundreds in Test cricket by India batsman. While MS Dhoni had hit 6 hundreds in 90 Tests, Rohit Sharma has got to the landmark in just his 30th Test.
Inida vs South Africa, 3rd Test Day 1: Live updates
Rohit Sharma, it is safe to say, has sealed the Test opener's spot for the near future with his dominant performances at the top of the order for India in the ongoing 3-Test series against South Africa. Rohit was promoted to open the innings in the longest format of the game for the 1st time in Visakhapatnam Test.
There was considerable pressure on Rohit Sharma as the promotion to the opener's role was seen as his last chance to save his Test career that had never taken off.
However, Rohit answered his critics in style by becoming the 1st-ever batsman to score hundred in each innings in his 1st Test as opener. Rohit made 176 in the 1st innings of the Visakhapatnam Test and followed it up with a game-changing and attacking 127 in the 2nd innings.
Despite suffering a rare failure at home in the Pune Test, Rohit Sharma was back at his best in the ongoing Test in Ranchi.
Even as South Africa jolted India's top-order with the wickets of Mayank Agarwal (10), Cheteshwar Pujara (0) and captain Virat Kohli (12), Rohit Sharma saw off the new ball and started dominating the South African attack after getting set.
