RANCHI: Where is Mahendra Singh Dhoni? Will he come to watch the Ranchi Test?

These are the questions every fan gathered to watch Team India’s practice sessions here was asking on Thursday. Media persons were equally keen about the whereabouts of the iconic cricketer, who is enjoying a sabbatical from cricket.

Exactly when he is coming back to the field is not clear but rumour and speculation about his cricketing future continue to rage. Sourav Ganguly, the Board of Control for Cricket in India president-elect, recently said, “I will find out from the selectors when I meet them on October 24 (when the selectors meet to pick the side for the series against Bangladesh). We will find out what the selectors are thinking and then I will put forth my opinion.”

Keshav Banerjee, the man who can lay claim to having discovered Dhoni when he was a school cricketer, is not really happy with all the fuss. “Dhoni has been playing relentlessly since 2004. So he deserves this sabbatical,” Banerjee told TOI. “Let him spend some time with his family.”

Asked how long he thinks Dhoni will continue as an international cricketer, Banerjee said, “I think he will play the World T20 next year, then take a call.”

He also said “it is a good thing” that India now have a pool of wicketkeepers to choose Dhoni’s successor from. “Jharkhand’s own Ishan Kishan is doing very well, so is Sanju Samson. Wriddhiman Saha may not be a good choice for white-ball cricket as he is not a big-hitter but see how fantastic he is behind the stumps in Tests. Selectors have so many choices now,” he said.

He also believes the young players on the selectors’ radar should be picked for the Bangladesh series. “More important than Dhoni’s return is providing the young ones who have impressed in domestic cricket a chance to play for India,” said Banerjee. “We should not waste their peak by making them play only domestic matches. Bangladesh series is the ideal opportunity to test them.”
