Jonny Bairstow out of Tests, no Ben Stokes in T20Is as England announce squads for New Zealand tour
England cricket team ended a memorable summer 2019 where they clinched their maiden World Cup title and ended the Ashes at 2-2, despite conceding the urn to Tim Paine-led Australia. The national side will now embark upon their next tour, where they will face New Zealand in five T20Is and two Test matches.
It is interesting to note that the upcoming England-New Zealand Test series won't be a part of the ICC Test Championship. Hence, the England Cricket Board announced a 15-man squad for the Tests with the likes of Jonny Bairstow and James Anderson missing out. While the wicketkeeper-batsman remains a part of the T20I line-up, he will be out of action from the longer format after an ordinary run in Ashes 2019.
On the other hand, James Anderson remains unavailable for selection as he continues his rehabilitation from a calf injury. The veteran English pacer was a part of the Ashes opener at Edgbaston, Birmingham but was ruled out midway from the first Test itself.
Talking about the T20I squad, Eoin Morgan will return to action after a good break since he led England to their maiden World Cup triumph in the 50-over format. He will lead a 15-man squad in the format which consists of some regulars in Bairstow, Joe Denly, Adil Rashid, Sam Curran, Tom Curran, etc. However, there are a number of new faces called up in the form of Tom Banton, Saqib Mahmood, Pat Brown, Matthew Parkinson and the likes. Ben Stokes is not part of the T20I squad.
With the focus of every side towards managing the workload of their key players with the ICC Test Championship in progress and World Twenty20 (WT20), in Australia next year, it seems like England are willing to experiment and try out new players to expand their options.
Both the Test and T20I squads have several newcomers and it will be interesting to see how England perform in New Zealand, whom they defeated in an epic World Cup final on July 14th.
