Just how lopsided was the India-South Africa Test series?
- India made it 26 wins out of 32 matches played at home and a record 11th successive Test series win at home.
- India now sit pretty atop the World Test Championship table with 240 points from five matches.
- India had seven centurions (three of them doubled up) compared with just two for South Africa.
NEW DELHI: India's 3-0 rout of South Africa in the Test series is complete. On the fourth day of the third and final Test in Ranchi, it took India all but two overs to prize out the two remaining wickets to complete their biggest win over South Africa - by an innings and 202 runs - eclipsing the record set in the previous Test in Pune, nine days ago.
With Tuesday's victory, India also made it 26 wins out of 32 matches played at home (read a record 11th successive Test series win at home) and now sit pretty atop the World Test Championship table with 240 points from five matches - all the other teams have a combined 232 points. And while it underlines India's domination, here are some key areas where the South Africans too played a part in making this a terribly one-sided contest.
Batting: To begin with, across the three Tests, India had seven centurions (three of them doubled up) compared with just two for South Africa. The hosts, in fact, put on seven century partnerships compared with the Proteas' three. Also, India's top five batsmen averaged 91.05 to the 17.10 managed by South Africa's top five.
And the difference of 73.95 in average batting partnerships for the first five wickets was the second-largest in a series of three or more Tests in the last 100 years. Only Australia managed a bigger difference - of 124.08 - when they took on the West Indies at home in 2015-16. Oh, and did we mention that the visitors were also made to follow on twice, having been bowled out in all of their six innings, lasting 475.4 overs in total (or 79 overs per innings).
Bowling: South Africa's bowlers could only manage 25 wickets compared with 60 for India - the difference of 45 was the fourth-highest in a three-match Test series.
Fact: India's bowlers picked up five five-wicket hauls while South Africa had none. And the difference in bowling averages for both sides - the fifth-highest in a three-match series - makes it starker. While India's bowlers averaged 22.84, the visitors managed a disappointing 75.44.
As far as pace goes, India's quicks picked up 26 wickets at 17.50 while the South Africans managed just 10 at 70.20. Not just with the new cherry - in the first 20 overs, India picked up 20 wickets at 15.60, while South Africa got 5 wickets at 43.40 - the hosts were on song with the slightly older ball as well (after 20 overs of play), picking up 38 wickets at 26.65 to South Africa's 20 wickets at 83.45.
