Kapil Dev points out where Rishabh Pant is lagging behind in international cricket
Rishabh Pant's progress is keenly being looked upon. His growth and current form has been a hot topic of discussion in the Indian cricket ever since MS Dhoni has been on a sabbatical following the 2019 World Cup in England and Wales. Despite getting a good run across formats in the national side, the left-hander hasn't quite delivered. Nonetheless, his shot selection and failure to convert starts into big scores have left many concerned.
Thus, the question on what needs to be done for Pant to adapt better in order to regain his lost form. Former Indian skipper Kapil Dev was asked the same on where the young wicketkeeper-batsman is lagging behind. In this regard, the 60-year-old made some glaring points.
"For me, he must wait to feel the sweet touch of the ball on the bat. What is the hurry? He has the ability and the calibre. It is the temperament that he needs to work on. There is a thin line between failure and success. You connect the shot and you are a hero. If you don’t, the same shot becomes your nemesis. It’s a tough choice to make, but a choice has to be made before it is too late," told the 1983 World Cup-winning skipper.
Pant got few chances in the 2019 World Cup after being preferred over the likes of Ambati Rayudu, Shreyas Iyer and other No. 4 prospects. While he did a decent job with the willow, he failed in the month-long tour of West Indies. Further, the left-hander also couldn't make the most of the opportunities given in the recently-concluded India-South Africa T20Is.
The Virat Kohli-led Indian cricket team are currently preparing for the upcoming three-match Test series versus the Proteas. This will be their second assignment in the ICC Test Championship, where Team India are present atop in the overall standings.
For Pant, the Test series will be another massive opportunity to showcase his credentials in the red-ball cricket where he has done reasonably better. Nonetheless, with Wriddhiman Saha as the second wicketkeeper-batsman in the line-up, he will have to fight for his spot.
