Kuldeep Yadav reacts after being snubbed from T20I series against South Africa
Indian spinner Kuldeep Yadav has not been discouraged by the selectors and team management's decision to drop him from T20Is. Once India's major weapon in the limited-overs format, the pair of Kuldeep and Yuzvendra Chahal have not played a single game together since the conclusion of ICC World Cup 2019 where the duo couldn't make much of an impact. However, Kuldeep feels the break from T20Is could be an opportunity for him to cement his spot in Tests as he continues to compete with Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja.
Both Chahal and Kuldeep have not been named in the T20I squads for two consecutive series against West Indies and South Africa. While Chahal remains out of contention from Tests, as well, Kuldeep has been named in the Test squad for the two-match series against Proteas. Reacting to his exclusion from the T20I squad, the Chinaman spinner said he had no complaints and respected the selectors' decision in giving youngsters like Rahul Chahar and Washington Sundar preference over him and Chahal.
“I did well in white-ball cricket; my stats are good. Maybe the selectors feel they need to give me a break in Twenty20s, and that some changes are required. I respect that, and I have no complaints. I see this as an opportunity to do well in Tests,” Kuldeep was quoted as saying in a report.
With captain Virat Kohli emphasising on increasing the depth in India's batting order in the shortest format of the game, Kuldeep and Chahal don't fit the scheme of things. In the ongoing series against South Africa, India have named as many as four all-rounders in the squad and all of them found a spot in the playing XI in the 2nd T20I which India won by seven wickets to get off to a perfect start.
While his spot in T20Is looks threatened, Kuldeep is determined to prove himself in red-ball cricket and is ready to grab the opportunities by both hands in Tests.
“When three spinners like Ashwin, Jaddu (Jadeja) and I are in the squad, it’s challenging to pick the right combination. You need to be ready to grab your chance. Of course, there is pressure because you only get a few chances, and you have to make full use of them,” he said.
