The Tony and Calvin McEvoy stable narrowly missed out in the Group 2 Matriarch Stakes at Flemington with Aristocratic Miss on the final day of Flemington Carnival but made amends with a double in Adelaide.

The Pugilist broke his maiden status with Todd Pannell in the saddle before The Natural was even more impressive to give them a race to race Adelaide double.

Calvin McEvoy was quick to pay tribute to their Angaston stable for all their work after hectic week.

Xilong and East Indiaman were both placed at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day while they produced a double at Morphettville with Balaabel and Fields Of Ivy.

Sunlight’s sister Sisstar gave them their loan Flemington success for the week winning on Oaks Day, while they also had winners at Gawler and Cranbourne.

“We’ve always had such time for this filly, she just didn’t get it right as a two-year-old,’’ Calvin McEvoy said.

“She’s a quality filly, we’ve always thought she was stakes class and she’ll get better with a it of age,’’ he said.

Jockey Barend Vorster said there was plenty of upside to the three-yearold

“She actually began too well,’’ jockey Barend Vorster said.

“Through the middle stages she relaxed lovey and was very good up the straight.

McEvoy said The Pugilist had been a touch disappointing early in his career but was more than capable of putting more together.

“He’s been a horse that we’ve taken to the races very confident and he’d let us down,’’ McEvoy said.

“It was an easy watch,’’ he said.
