Malolan becomes RCB's head of scouting
CHENNAI: When Royal Challengers Bangalore announced its coaching staff list on Thursday, Malolan Rangarajan's name caught the attention of many. The current Tamil Nadu player will be head of scouting in the IPL franchise. Malolan's presence in RCB's support staff may come as a surprise but the 30-year-old has been working towards this role for the last couple of years.
"I have been involved in the strategic and scouting aspect of my TNCA league side Vijay CC for the last two years. When I got the opportunity to meet Mike Hesson earlier this month and give my presentation - he seemed impressed. Things moved swiftly from there and I am happy to be part of the RCB franchise," Malolan told TOI.
Malolan is thrilled to be working with players of the quality of Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers. "The RCB line-up has some of the best talent in the world. It will be a fabulous experience to be working alongside them," he said.
Divulging on the specifics of his role, Malolan said, "To identify talents and keep a track of them is just one part of my profile. I will be working closely with the director of cricket (Hesson) and the analytics team. The analytics team will offer their inputs to the team coach and so on," said Malolan. His profile requires him to be travelling to domestic tournaments and have a close look at players who will fit in the RCB line-up. "I will go for a few Vijay Hazare games to have a look at the players. However, there will be more targeted scouting at the Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament later this year," said Malolan.
Does the new role mean curtains to his playing career? Malolan was measured in his response when he said, "I have not given it a thought yet. I am not part of the TN line-up for Vijay Hazare Trophy. At the moment, I am only concentrating on the role with RCB and not thinking much about anything else," said Malolan, who has featured in 47 first-class games - scoring 1379 runs and taking 136 wickets. Apart from Malolan, Sridharan Sriram was named the batting and spin-bowling coach while Shankar Basu will be RCB's strength and conditioning coach.
