The way Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) sacked Sarfaraz Ahmed on Friday, it has raised a lot of eyebrows. While his captaincy was under the scanner for quite some time now, there is no denying that the decision from PCB came out of the blue. PCB sacked the wicketkeeper-batsman as the Test and T20I captain and named Azhar Ali and Babar Azam as the new captains.

PCB also dropped Sarfaraz Ahmed for Pakistan’s upcoming tour of Australia. Sarfaraz Ahmed was named the T20I captain following the 2016 ICC World Twenty20 in India, while he took over as their ODI skipper in 2017 after Azhar Ali stepped down. Under his captaincy, Pakistan won the Champions Trophy 2017 by defeating arch-rivals India in the final.

But things did not really pan out in the expected manner after that historic win. The year started with a Test series drubbing at the hands of the South Africa, which was followed by a sequence of 11 back-to-back defeats in ODIs. And in the wake of Sarfaraz Ahmed’s sacking, former Pakistan wicketkeeper Moin Khan has lashed out at Pakistan’s head coach Misbah-ul-Haq and bowling coach Waqar Younis.

“Misbah and Waqar never liked Sarfaraz,” Moin Khan told Ary News.  “I am shocked that the PCB has removed Sarfaraz from captaincy in T20 cricket.”

“He has led Pakistan to 11 consecutive T20 series wins and you can’t remove him due to few poor performances. I think making a single person too powerful won’t work for Pakistan’s cricket,” added the legendary wicketkeeper.

Sarfaraz Ahmed’s sacking came on the heels of Pakistan’s defeat to Sri Lanka. Despite facing a second-string Sri Lankan side, Pakistan lost all the three games of the T20I series in Lahore. The wicketkeeper-batsman will now have to toil hard in domestic cricket and hope for the best.
