Niathu Sports Festival begins
The three day Niathu Group Sports Festival got underway on October 24 at Niathu Resort, Dimapur with Lt. General Rajeev Sirohi, AVSM, VSM, GOC 3 Corps as guest of honour.
Addressing the gathering at the launching programme, Lt. General Rajeev Sirohi, said that taking part in sports activities was the best way to celebrate a youth life. Participation and getting to know one another was more important than winning or losing, said the guest of honour and encouraged the participants to make new friends in the field and compete with their best ability and with true sportsmanship feeling.
He also spoke about how the Assam Rifles had provided privileges in the remote areas of the state by providing and maintaining proper grounds. It is a pleasure and joy of the Assam Rifles to see the young generation participating in outdoor activities, he added.
He further maintained that youth of today’s generation had tremendous scope in the field of sports and urged them to take responsibility to promote the talented sports persons.
Delivering the welcome address, Kechangulie Rio, chairman, Niathu Group of Hotels and Resorts said that the festival was aimed to inspire and teach to inculcate better and healthier life through sports and also to provide a platform for friendship through sports. He maintained that sportsmen and sportswomen were brought together in the quest for excellence and friendship.
He also stated that in the current edition, traditional sports like Naga wrestling was included, so as to promote and uplift traditional games and sports. Sports like angling and cycling were included due to popular demand, he added.
Teams from Tripura, Assam, Manipur and the armed forces are also taking part in the tournament.
Earlier, the programme was compeered by Ato Yepthomi and invocation was offered by Kezha Dzuvichu, vice president, ABCC.
The events of the sports festival are volleyball, badminton, lawn tennis, billiards and snooker, Naga wrestling, Niathu 4X4 challenge, angling and cycling.
