Periyaswamy gets maiden Tamil Nadu call-up for Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy
CHENNAI: Dinesh Karthik will lead Tamil Nadu in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament to be played in Trivandrum from November 8 and 17, and while all-rounder Vijay Shankar will be Karthik’s deputy, G Periyaswamy — the slinger from Salem who had shone during the fourth edition of Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) — was the only new face in the line-up.
“Right from the time I bowled in TNPL this year to seeing my name feature in the state side, it all seems like a dream. It will be great if I get a chance to bowl alongside Nattu (T Natarajan) anna as we have done it on numerous occasions in Salem,” Periyaswamy told TOI.
A TNCA official said Periyaswamy got the nod for being consistent during the TNPL.
“Periyaswamy impressed all during the TNPL with his consistency. His action is different from others and batsmen will find it tough to pick him,” a TNCA official said.
Karthik’s pro-active captaincy in the recently-concluded Vijay Hazare Trophy made the selectors continue with his services in the upcoming tournament as well.
“Ahead of the season, we had kept the option open of having different captains for different formats. But Karthik’s strong leadership skills in the Vijay Hazare Trophy ensured we gave him a longer run at the helm,” said a TNCA official.
He added that it was too early to state if Karthik could be given the reign in Ranji Trophy as well.
“Karthik is one of the most experienced players in the TN squad. He has done well so far but Ranji Trophy is over a month away and we can’t comment on who will captain the side,” said the official.
The selectors sprung a surprise by omitting opener Abhinav Mukund who was the second highest run-getter with 600 runs at this year’s Vijay Hazare Trophy.
“It was a tough call to make since Abhinav has been in great form. The requirements of T20s are very different. You have to start striking from the word go, and that’s where Abhinav missed out,” said the official.
Star offi-spinner R Ashwin is likely to feature in the first three matches of the tournament before leaving for the two-Test series against Bangladesh, which starts in Indore from November 14. Washington Sundar will join the team after the completion of the T20s against Bangladesh.
TN camp from November 1
The Tamil Nadu T20 squad will be having a five-day training camp at the NPR College in Dindigul.
“Players will train at Dindigul from November 1 to 5 before leaving for Trivandrum,” said a source.
