Indian skipper Virat Kohli stated the players need to prove their mettle before the T20I World Cup next year. Kohli said as the competition in the national side is stiff, no player can get 30 chances to prove his worth. The next T20I World Cup is almost a year away and the players who will come up with consistent performances will have better chances of getting more opportunities.

India has a truckload of talent and the players need to make the most of the opportunity. The young players have come to the scene and it would be interesting to note how they will handle the pressure. The Indian players are accustom to playing under the pump as they get the opportunity to play in front of the jam-packed crowd in the Indian Premier League.

The focus is on the future.

“We are very clear. It is not that anyone will get 30 chances. Even when I came in the team, I didn’t think I will get 15—20 games and I knew I will mostly get chances in three to five games and I have to prove myself. One will get suppose five chances and he will have to prove himself. That is the level we are playing at. As the team management has that mindset, the individual should also have the same,” Kohli said in an interaction on bcci.tv.

India has 30 T20Is matches before the next in Australia and they need to figure out the right balance before the mega event.

“It is a delicate balance to strike but as we have 30 games before it (World Cup), so we have to figure out how much time each individual gets,” he added.

Kohli stated that it is crucial to find the right team combination. For that, India is focussing on finding the young players who will take Indian cricket forward.

“We feel both the T20Is and the Test championship are in our focus as both of them are milestones and that is why youngsters are being pushed in from time to time as it is important to settle the team combination because we have to figure out the guys who will take the team forward.”

The first T20I between India and South Africa was abandoned due to rain without a ball been bowled. The second T20I will take place at Mohali on 18th September.
