Pune Test: Agarwal's century, first day India's names (roundup)
Pune, 10 October (IANS) | Thanks to a 108-run stand by opener Mayank Agarwal, the Indian cricket team celebrated the first day of the second Test match being played at the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Stadium here.
By the end of the day's play, India had scored 273 for three wickets. From the host team, captain Virat Kohli 63 and Ajinkya Rahane scored 18 runs and the crease is present. India batted a total of 85.1 overs and the umpires decided to end the first day due to poor light. From South Africa, only fast bowler Kagiso Rabada got success. He took three wickets for 48 runs in 18.1 overs. Other bowlers Warnon Philander, Senuran Muthusamy, Keshav Maharaj and Enrique Nortje did not get a single wicket.
Earlier, winning the toss, Indian captain Kohli decided to bat first. India started off slow. Initially the ball was moving and that is why both the openers were playing well.
One such ball of Rabada took the outer edge of Rohit's bat and went into the hands of wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock. Rohit faced 35 balls and hit just one four.
Pujara, who came after Rohit, also adopted the strategy of playing well. However, just two overs before the announcement of tea time, Rabada bowled out Pujara to give India another blow. Before being dismissed, Pujara shared a 138-run partnership for the second wicket with Mayank. Pujara scored 58 runs off 112 balls with the help of nine fours. An excellent outswinger from Rabada went to the outside edge with Pujara's bat where skipper Faf du Plessis caught a good catch.
Agarwal managed to complete the second century of his career, but he could not support Kohli for much longer. Agarwal's wicket was also taken by Rabada.
After this, Kohli, along with Ajinkya Rahane, batted brilliantly and did not allow the hosts to take the fourth blow. The two have already shared a 75-run partnership.
In the Test, the number-1 team India has maintained a 1-0 lead by winning a stunning victory in the first match of this three-match Test series.
