Ravichandran Ashwin reacts after being switched from Kings XI Punjab to Delhi Capitals ahead of IPL 2020
Ravichandran Ashwin wasn't retained by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2018 auction when the franchise commenced their readmission into the cash-rich league after a two-year hiatus. In the search for a new leader, Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) went for Ashwin and appointed him the skipper for the next two years.
Ashwin led KXIP with utmost determination and zeal. However, in the last two seasons, KXIP started off in style only to surrender the momentum towards the business end of the group stages to bow out before the playoffs. Hence, Ashwin's future seemed unclear in the Punjab franchise ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020.
While there were murmurs of Ashwin being on course for a switch to Delhi Capitals (DC), the development finally materialised this week. The wily off-spinner has been switched to the Delhi franchise for a whopping 7.6 crores. KXIP have swapped Ashwin with left-arm spinner Jagadeesha Suchith.
With his run coming to an end in KXIP, Ashwin reacted in this regard and said, "It has been a wonderful journey with Kings XI Punjab. I will always look back fondly at the two years I spent with the Kings and will miss all my teammates. I am looking ahead to new challenges. I would also like to thank the fans for their endless support over the two years, it was incredible to see them come out and support their team."
In the two editions for KXIP, Ashwin finished with a total of 25 wickets and was their second-highest wicket-taker in the 2019 edition. While the Punjab franchise ended seventh in IPL 2018, they managed to end a spot above in the last season under Ashwin's leadership.
One of the highlights of Ashwin's stay in KXIP will undoubtedly be the mankading episode, which was sparked by the Indian spinner by dismissing Jos Buttler in a controversial manner in the last edition.
The IPL 2020 auction will be held in December and for the first time in Kolkata.
