Rishabh Pant is India's solution for all formats: Sourav Ganguly
After a swift rise, Pant has had to cop criticism for his shot selection that seen him throw away his wicket, especially in limited-overs cricket. Already, alternatives are being suggested to replace him from Sanju Samson to veteran Wriddhiman Saha.
But the 21-year-old has also drawn support from the likes of Sunil Gavaskar, Gautam Gambhir and Yuvraj Singh who want the seniors to guide him in his phase of struggle.
Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has been a constant supporter of Pant, having mentored him during his time with the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
In his column for The Times of India, Ganguly has picked Pant as the solution to India's middle-order problems across formats saying it's not right to judge him based on T20Is.
"I know that the talks about the middle-order which stalled with the conclusion of the World Cup has re-opened again and I don't think Virat Kohli should take much note of it," Ganguly wrote. "He has a young batting unit under him and all of them will need a lot of support from the captain, at the top of the list will be Rishabh Pant. His entry into international cricket has been brilliant and for me, he is India's solution for all the formats.
As per a report, Kohli and coach Ravi Shastri are concerned by Pant's batting form which they feel might have affected his confidence and wicketkeeping.
But Ganguly feels the proper guidance will go a long way into the youngster performing at his best. "There has been talk about Pant's shot selection and rightly so but all must understand, he will learn and only get better. He is a match-winner and a long-term bet for India. Amidst all criticism Virat's guidance will see him through and that ultimately matters. Let's not make T20 cricket a platform to judge shot selection," he said..
