Rishabh Pant needs to be given freedom; Virat Kohli, Ravi Shastri should talk to him: Gautam Gambhir
Ever since MS Dhoni announced his sabbatical from international cricket, Rishabh Pant’s every move on the cricket field has been under scrutiny. Touted as the hot favourite to become India’s first-choice wicketkeeper across formats, Pant has let his fans down by his careless approach while batting. Backing the beleaguered glovesman, former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir opined that the team management needs to have a word with the youngster, who has done fairly well in his short career so far.
Highlighting the fact that the management needs to give freedom to Pant, Gambhir added that Indian captain Virat Kohli and head coach Ravi Shastri need to have a word with him. "Not only (Virat) Kohli but also coach Ravi Shastri should talk to Pant. It is the duty of the team management to personally talk to the player who is not in form or if he is not perfect with his shot selection as it would help him improve and regain his touch. There is a need to give him freedom," the Delhi batsman said on the sidelines of an event.
Gambhir added that the Indian think tank needs to give Pant their backing since his style of batting is different. "I feel if you focus solely on a young player, who has been in the international arena for just around a year, he will feel the pressure. In such a short time, he (Pant) has smashed two Test tons. If you don't find his shot selections ideal, it is his style of play. If you give him a chance in the team then kindly back him and it is wrong to criticise him so early,” Gambhir added.
Pant, who was called as a replacement in ICC World Cup 2019, hasn't managed to score a big knock in the coloured jersey. What has led to severe criticism is him failing to put a price on his wicket. Soon after the end of ICC World Cup 2019, chief selector MSK Prasad revealed that the management is seeing Pant as Dhoni's successor across formats while the Ranchi cricketer is expected to play the role of a mentor.
