The last few months have been nothing less than forgettable for Rishabh Pant. It was all going so well for the young wicketkeeper-batsman in the summer. After a highly successful tour of Australia where he scored a century in Tests, he impressed in the Indian Premier League. He was then added to the World Cup squad to replace injured Vijay Shankar.

But since then, things have not panned out in expected manner. The youngster had a chance to seal his spot in the team across formats when MS Dhoni took a sabbatical and he was picked as the first-choice wicketkeeper for the West Indies tour. However, Rishabh Pant failed miserably across formats.

He failed to impress against South Africa at home too and soon paid the price. The failures saw him lose his place in the playing eleven to Wriddhiman Saha in Tests for the just-concluded three-match series against the Proteas. Saha, nonetheless, made the most of the chance by showcasing his world-class wicketkeeping.

All eyes will be now on the selectors when they sit down to select the squad for the upcoming three-match T20I and two-match Test series against Bangladesh next month. Rishabh Pant is unlikely to be an automatic pick especially in T20Is because of his failure in the white-ball format in international cricket.

However, The Times of India has reported that the selectors will persist with Pant for the Bangladesh series. There were calls to try out Sanju Samson in limited-overs format but it looks like Pant will get more chance to prove himself.

“The present selection committee had identified Pant as the preferred choice to replace Dhoni. It is likely that would want to stick with him and give him enough opportunities to establish himself. Whether the team management is also on the same page is what needs to be seen,” sources told the news outlet.

The series against Bangladesh will start with the first T20I on November 3.
