Robin Uthappa Reveals Who Motivated Mayank Agarwal During His Struggling Period
Before getting the call-up in the national team, Mayank Agarwal dominated the domestic cricket for a good time. But before that, he faced a struggling period in domestic cricket. Even he was very close to face exclusion from his domestic side Karnataka but then captain strongly backed him and motivated to return to his form. Recently, his domestic teammate and 59 international matches experienced player Robin Uthappa revealed this story.
In November 2017, Mayank Agarwal scored 304* in the Ranji Trophy game against Maharashtra. Robin Uthappa recently revealed the earlier story of Mayank Agarwal when the 41-match-experienced international player Vinay Kumar motivated the struggling batsman to return to his form.
According to India.com, Uthappa said, “I remember we contemplated dropping him from a Ranji game but when (captain) R Vinay Kumar gave him a push (motivational words), he scored a triple hundred and did not look back from there.”
In Ranji Trophy 2016/17, Karnataka batsman Mayank Agarwal scored only 284 runs in 13 innings (7 matches) with an average of 23.66. But in the very next Ranji Trophy season, Mayank finished as the leading run-scorer in that tournament. He scored 1,160 runs in 13 innings (8 matches) of Ranji Trophy 2017/18 with an incredible average of 105.45. While the right-handed batsman scored only three half-centuries in 2016/17 Ranji Trophy, he hit five centuries and two more half-centuries in the next Ranji Trophy season.
Mayank Agarwal will only get better with more opportunities – Robin Uthappa
In the ongoing Visakhapatnam Test against South Africa, Mayank registered his maiden three-figure score in Test career. The opening batsman scored 215 runs that led the Indian team to manage a big first-innings total of 502/7.

Indian openers Mayank Agarwal and provided a great start in the first innings of the ongoing Visakhapatnam Test. They put a remarkable 317-run partnership for the first wicket and it guided the national team to the big total. Before Mayank’s outstanding double-century, Rohit dominated the Proteas bowlers. Robin Uthappa hasn’t felt any surprise on Rohit Sharma’s success as an opener.
Uthappa said, “He (Rohit) has always done well in India and abroad. In white-ball cricket, he dominates the scene right now. He is arguably one of the best batsman in the world. He has reached a point in his career where he understands his batting really well and knows what works for him. Given that situation, he must be going through a huge surge in confidence. I think he has figured out opening the batting and this opportunity came at the right moment for Rohit to capitalise on it. So it’s not a surprise that he is successful.”
