NEW DELHI: Big scores are synonymous with Rohit Sharma, and Sunday was no different when the India opener delighted the holiday crowd in Ranchi with his maiden double century (212) in Test cricket, joining an elite list of batsmen to achieve the feat in both Tests and ODIs.

At lunch on the second day of the third Test against South Africa, Rohit walked back for the afternoon meal at 199 not out. But you don't attribute nervousness to a batsman who has scored three double centuries in 50-over internationals.

After playing a maiden over after lunch to get his eye back in, Rohit struck Lungi Ngidi for six to bring up the landmark and then followed it up with another sixer to celebrate a feat that reminded of how Virender Sehwag used to cross milestones. Coincidentally, it's Sehwag's birthday today.

In total, Rohit hit 28 fours and 6 sixes. He was 117* at stumps on day one and had brought up his century as well with a six.

With one more innings possible for Rohit in the three-Test series, he has already aggregated a mammoth 529 runs at an average of 132.25. His four innings so far in the series read 176, 127, 14 and 212. For a batsman whose red-ball credentials were being questioned before the series, it's the best way a sportsperson can answer his critics.

With a total 19 sixes in the series, Rohit now also holds the record of most sixes in a Test series.

But Rohit fell soon after crossing the milestone, caught by Ngidi off Kagiso Rabada, who has been the only South African bowler to impress.
