India's opening batsman and world rank 2 in ODIs, Rohit Sharma has been an active member of the movement towards protecting the wildlife, for many years now.

The Mumbai Indians Captain recently made a massive contribution worth Rs 25 lakh towards organisations such as the World Wide Fund (WWF) and Ol Pejeta, that exist to look after wildlife conservation.

Having started his campaign to protect the endangered species of the world back in 2015, Sharma had first met Sudan, the last male rhinoceros of the Northern White African species.

Standing on the edge of extinction due to poaching, climate change and the consequential loss of habitat, the rhino species, especially Sudan himself had a major impact on the cricketer, who was instantly drawn by the mission of protecting these precious beings.

An open advocate of the WWF, Sharma has spoken on numerous occasions about the conservation of rhinos. One of the rhino calves was even named after Sharma's daughter Samaira earlier this year.

On World Rhino Day on September 22, the 32-year-old went on the internet to educate his fans about the critical status of yet another species of the rhinoceros, the Indian Rhinos.

“Today is #WorldRhinoDay. The #IndianRhino faces threats of #poaching and #habitatloss and it is our duty to make sure that we don't let this majestic species fade into extinction. Support me, @WWFINDIA and @AnimalPlanetIn as we #BatForRhinos at http://rohit4rhinos.org,” he wrote.

With the hopes of creating awareness about the criminal activities that take place against these majestic creatures, Sharma also puts a sticker on his bat.

“I am batting for these gentle giants in association with WWF India. It is our duty to shield them because they too have a family to grow,” Sharma said in an Animal Planet India video. “And this is where it is not about cricket anymore," he added.

While other celebrities get involved in the “act” of donating money to gain face in public, Sharma has been working selflessly towards making the lives of others better with time, money and whatever it is that he can help with.

We talk about how the world is coming to an end. We worry about global warming, loss of habitat, illegal activities disrupting the balance of nature, but we seldom act on it. A true leader on the field, Rohit Sharma has proven that he is capable of actually making a change, rather than simply talking about it.
