When Rohit Sharma walked out to open the innings vs South Africa in the 1st Test with Mayank Agarwal, the question on everybody's mind was how would he do? This was the first time he was opening in Tests and despite is success at the top in the limited overs formats, people were skeptical.

Well, he put all that to rest as he produced a dazzling hundred. It was his 4th Test ton and 1st as an opener and what a way to announce oneself as the Test opener. Reminds us a lot about another dashing batsman who was made to open, a certain individual named Virender Sehwag.

One must remember that despite making his international debut in 2007, Rohit had to wait till 2013 to break into the Test side. Despite 2 hundreds in his first 2 games, he could only get one more in the next 25. The fact that this is his 28th Test in 6 years shows he has not been able to maintain a place. This opening slot might just be his second coming as a Test player.

He reached his fifty just before lunch and the century came in 154 balls with 10 fours and 4 sixes. With Mayank, he toyed with the Protean attack as the bowlers had no answer. The opening stand means India have a base for a big total.

Rohit's knock may only be a sign of things to come, but the real test will be when he has to open overseas. But for the moment, he can bask in the glory of his success.
