Rohit Sharma receives rich praises from Gambhir, Harbhajan after scripting history on debut as Test opener
Making sure runs keep flowing from his willow on his debut stint as opener in red-ball cricket for India, Rohit Sharma scaled new heights with his second successive century against South Africa in the ongoing Test match at the ACA-VDCA Stadium on Saturday. Coming as a quick-fix to the rising Indian opening conundrum after KL Rahul's failure of cementing his position, Rohit championed the longest format of the game in both essays by slamming 176 and 127 to put India ahead of South Africa.
First to smash twin centuries on Test debut as opener
Thanks to his twin centuries, the Hitman is now the first batsman to smash hundred in both of his innings on his Test debut as opener. Hailed as a walking nightmare for bowlers in white-ball cricket, Rohit showed glimpse of his One Day Internationals (ODI) cricket dominance in the opening Test with two splendid knocks to put India in the driving set at stumps Day 4. The Hitman also scripted history with his second innings total of 127 runs off 149 balls.
Breaks Wasim Akram's 23-year-old record
The 32-year-old has eclipsed former Indian opener Navjot Singh Sidhu by smashing mist number of sixes in Test cricket for India. Rohit also surpassed former Pakistan great Wasim Akram to break the Test record of hitting most sixes. Rohit overall cleared the boundary with 13 maximums and scored 303 runs in both the innings. Akram had the previous best with 12 sixes against Zimbabwe 23 years ago in the 1996/97 Test series between the two sides.
Gambhir, Harbhajan hail Hitman for record fest outing
