Shafali Verma shatters Sachin Tendulkar's long-standing record with maiden T20I half-century vs West Indies
It was certainly an unforgettable outing for youngster Shafali Verma, who helped India Women defeat West Indies Women by 84 runs in the first of the five-match T20I series at the Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in Gros Islet, St Lucia on Sunday. Not only did Shafali whacked the Windies bowlers all over the park in her thunderous knock of 73 off 49 deliveries, but the right-handed opener also ended up breaking a long-standing record of Sachin Tendulkar.
Shafali became the youngest Indian ever to smash an international half-century breaking Tendulkar’s long-standing record. While the Master Blaster had smashed his maiden Test fifty at the age of 16 years and 213 days, Shafali scored her maiden T20I fifty at just 15 years and 285 days.
The Indian opener hammered the Windies bowlers to give India Women a brisk start. Laced with six boundaries and four maximums, Shafali scored her runs at a strike-rate of 148.98 before getting dismissed in the 16th over. Prior to the first T20I against West Indies Women, Shafali had scored just 64 runs in four innings and answered her critics in style on Sunday.

Overall, the youngest ever cricketer (male or female) to register an international half-century continues to be South Africa Women’s Johmari Logtenberg, who achieved the feat at the age of 14 years. Among male cricketers, Nepal’s Rohit Paudel is the youngest batter to score an international fifty (16 years and 146 days).
