HIGHLIGHTS

  • Smriti Mandhana top-scored with 74 on her return to ODI side
  • Mandhana smashed 9 boundaries and 3 sixes
  • India gunned down a 195-run target with 6 wickets to spare

India women's cricket team consolidated its third place on ICC Women's Championships 2017-20 with a 2-1 series win over West Indies on Wednesday.

In the series decider at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua, India gunned down 195-run target with ease against West Indies to seal the 3-match series.

All eyes were on Smriti Mandhana, who was out of action with a toe injury, shone on comeback as she top-scored with a 63-ball 74. The injury had kept Mandhana out of action during the home series against South Africa and the 1st 2 ODIs in West Indies but the elegant left-hander looked in complete control on Wednesday.

Sriti Mandhana hit 9 boundaries and 3 sixes in her match-winning knock and helped put the pressure on West Indies bowlers in what turned out to be a relatively easy run chase.

Jemimah Rodrigues hit 69 from 92 balls as India women stitched a 141-run opening stand. India lost Rodrigues and Mandhana in quick succession but Punam Raut and captain Mithali Raj chipped in with handy knocks to steer the team towards the victory.

Earlier in the day, India bowlers came up with a combined effort to restrict Wet Indies for 194. Jhulan Goswami and Poonam Yadav picked up 2 wickets each while the likes of Shika Pandey, Rajeshwari Gayakwad and Deepti Sharma snared 1 each.

West Indies captain Stafaine Taylor posted 79 from 112 balls but it was not enough to help West Indies post a fighting total as she hardly found support from her teammates. Comeback woman Hayley Matthews, who returned to the team after serving out a ban, picked up 3 wickets.

After losing the 1st ODI on November 1 by 1 run, India women, under Mithali Raj, fought back and completed a remarkable series win.

The two teams will not play 5 T20Is in St Lucia and Guyana between November 9 and November 20. Cricket West Indies on Thursday announced their 14-member squad for the T20I series. Stafanie Taylor-led team will compete in a five-match T20I series against India.
