Sourav Ganguly Picks Best In The World After Steve Smith’s Ashes Heroics
The who is better between Steve Smith and Virat Kohli debate has re-surfaced once again after the Australian’s stunning performance in the recently-concluded Ashes. Despite remaining away from Test cricket for a year due to the ball-tampering scandal, Smith hit the ground running in Tests. He was by far the best batsman in the Ashes.
While most of the batsmen struggled for consistency, Smith delivered on almost all occasions. He finished the series with a staggering 774 runs in just 7 innings at an average of over 110. The performance also helped him reclaim the number one spot in ICC Test ranking and he is now also the leading run-scorer in Tests this year.Steve Smith (Credits: Twitter)
Kohli, on the other hand, also continues to impress. While the India skipper had a below-par outing in the Caribbeans as per his standards, he still managed two fifties in four innings. And as the debate continues to do the rounds, former India skipper Sourav Ganguly was also asked about the same.
However, Ganguly, who is a self-confessed Virat Kohli fan, did not want to compare Smith and the India star. he said that Virat Kohli is still the best in the world but Smith’s records speak for itself.
“These are questions not to be answered. How does it matter? It’s about performance. Virat is the best in the world at the moment. So that’s what makes us happy,” Ganguly was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.
Asked about Smith, he said: “His records speak for itself… 26 Test hundreds which is a phenomenal record.”Virat Kohli (Credits: Twitter)
The legendary batsman further backed India to beat South Africa in the ongoing T20I series and the upcoming Test series. The first T20 got washed out in Dharamsala and the second rubber is on September 18 in Mohali. Both the teams will play three T20Is before locking horns in as many Tests.
“India are favourites. India at home is a dangerous team. They are very hard to beat and that’s been the case for years,” Ganguly said.
