Steve Smith Best To Take Leadership Baton From Tim Paine – Ricky Ponting
Steve Smith has made a historic return to Australia team helping them to retain the Ashes in England for the first time since 2001. Post that, the speculation of Smith taking over the captaincy from incumbent Tim Paine is on an all-time high. Former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting also spoke on the same line saying that Smith is the best candidate to take over the baton.
With a one year ban for his role in the ball-tampering skills, Cricket Australia had said that Smith cannot lead any team for another one year. As the ban on leading Australia to end in March, the debates are on an all-time high post his incredible batting performances.
As the situation looms large, Ricky Ponting feels Steve Smith should have another go at the captaincy once Tim Pain decides to step down. “It’s the million-dollar question: when Steve Smith’s ban is up will he go straight back into the captaincy or will he not?” Ponting told 7NEWS.
“To be honest I think it’s up to Tim how long he plays. He’s the best keeper in the world. Whether that’s as captain or not that’s up to the hierarchy at Cricket Australia to make that decision. I’ve been on record already — when Tim’s time is up I’d like to see Steve Smith have another go,” he added.Tim Paine. (Credits – Getty)

Furthermore, Ricky Ponting also added Steve Smith might feel he has unfinished business as far as captaincy is concerned. The former cricketer also added that captaincy will not be a burden on Smith and is unlikely to affect his batting.
Tim Paine, who became the first Aussie captain to retain the Ashes in England since 2001, also backed Smith to return as captain.
“If he’s captain again I don’t think it’ll hinder his batting at all. If it’s the right thing for the team to have him captain we’ll win more games as a result of that,” Ponting concluded.
