Teen does a Kumble
Nirdesh Baisoya is all of 15, but he has pocketed a ten-for, something that Anil Kumble did in a Test match at the Kotla more than two decades back.
Baisoya, a 15-year old Meghalaya off-spinner, took all the 10 wickets of Nagaland in an U-16 Vijay Merchant Trophy match at the Assam Valley School ground in Tezpur on Wednesday.
Baisoya conceded just 51 runs off 21 overs as Meghalaya bundled Nagaland out for a paltry 113 on the first day. Meghalaya were 109/4 at stumps.
Baisoya, who shifted to Meghalaya from Meerut two years ago as a “guest player”, said he never dreamt of taking 10 wickets in an innings. “From my childhood I have been hearing that Kumble Sir took 10 wickets in an innings against Pakistan (in 1999).
“But I never thought that I would be able to match that feat in any level… Didn’t even dream of it,” Baisoya told The Telegraph. “At the lunch break, teammates told me that I have a chance to take 10 wickets. But I didn’t think about that till I reached the eighth wicket. I would like to thank all my teammates and the coach of our team, Sengam Momin, for the achievement.”
“I have a long way to go. My first target is to get selected for the India U-19 team,” Baisoya, who idolises Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon, said.
In his early days in Meerut, Baisoya used to be coached by Sanjay Rastogi. “I started training under Rastogi Sir when I was nine years old. I used to train regularly at the Victoria Park in Meerut.”
Team India players Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Praveen Kumar also trained at the Victoria Park during the off-season.
